This focused issue on Eyelid Surgery is edited by Dr. Ludwig M. Heindl, MD, PhD, from Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital Cologne, University of Cologne, Cologne, Germany; Dr. Ming Lin, MD, PhD, from Department of Ophthalmology, Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China; and Dr. Vladimir Kratky, BSc, MD, FRCSC, DABO, from Department of Ophthalmology, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

Dr. Ludwig M. Heindl holds the life-time university professorship in ophthalmology and is the director of Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery & Ophthalmic Oncology Center. His clinical fields of expertise include advanced diagnosis and treatment of eyelid, lacrimal, orbital and ocular surface diseases as well as tumors in and at the eye. Dr. Heindl has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers in several international journals including Ophthalmology, Plastic & reconstructive surgery, among others. He was honored with the Sallmann Clinician-Scientist Award by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), Leonhard-Klein-Award by the German Society of Ophthalmology (DOG), Erwin-Niehaus Award for Ophthalmology, and so on. He currently is a full member of the European Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ESOPRS) and serves on the executive board of Center for Integrated Oncology (CIO) Aachen-Bonn-Cologne-Duesseldorf.

Dr. Ming Lin has been working in the department since my graduation in 1993, additionally completed his MD and PhD degree. He is currently a chief physician of his department. His major is the treatment of orbital tumor, reconstruction of orbital and maxillofacial complex fracture and ocular plastic surgery including of ptosis, blepharal deformity, conjunctival sac constriction and symblepharon. He has published six major relative SCI paper in resent 5 years, and been working on a general program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

Dr. Vladimir Kratky has a full-time appointment at Queen’s University, Canada, where he holds an academic rank of Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology. He is also the Director of Ophthalmic Plastic and Orbital Service at the University Health Sciences Centre. He obtained his medical degree at the University of Ottawa and completed his Ophthalmology residency at the University of Toronto. This was followed by a 2-year fellowship in Ophthalmic Plastic and Orbital Surgery, also in Toronto. He is a fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) and a full member of the European Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ESOPRS). He is a past president of the Canadian Society of Oculoplastic Surgery (CSOPS) and continues to serve as a member of its executive board. He is also a member of the executive committee of the Ophthalmology Examination Board of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. His special interests include international Ophthalmology and he has the rank of Visiting Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the 1st Medical Faculty of Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic.

Dr. Kratky’s research interests include orbital biometrics and tissue pressure analysis, tear outflow physiology and novel treatments for eyelid cancers. He holds a US patent in an exophthalmometry device. He has published numerous scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, such as Ophthalmology and the ASOPRS journal, and has authored a book chapter on eyelid surgery. He is also a frequent invited speaker at conferences, both nationally and internationally.
