Karl Golnik

Dr. Golnik is Professor and Chairman of Ophthalmology at the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Cincinnati. Twenty years after obtaining his MD degree, he obtained a Master’s Degree in Education and puts this to use as Director for Education for the International Council of Ophthalmology, Immediate-President of the Joint Commission an Allied health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO), and Chair of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology’s Resident Education Committee. He has given more than 800 invited lectures in more than 50 countries and has over 100 publications in the fields of neuro-ophthalmology and medical education. His current research interests include development of improved methods of resident assessment and promotion of international accreditation of post-graduate ophthalmology training programs.
Yip Chee Chew
Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, Singapore, Singapore.
Professor Yip is the Educator Director and Senior Consultant at Yishun Health Campus, and Head, Oculoplastics Service, National Healthcare Group Eye Institute.
As academic staff of the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), his research and innovations in teaching and learning have won him several awards and six education research grants. He is national Ophthalmology Residency Advisory Committee member; and President, College of Clinician Educators, Academy of Medicine Singapore.
He was the Past President of Asia Pacific Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (2010-2012). He received the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award (2008), Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award (2017), NTU Honoured Faculty Award (2021), and Distinguished Service Award (2021) and NUS Dean's Award for Teaching Excellence (2017, 2018, 2020, 2021).
Ana Gabriela Palis
Ophthalmology Department, Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Dr. Ana Gabriela Palis graduated as a medical doctor in Universidad del Salvador in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1992. She completed her education in Ophthalmology at Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires, Argentina, and her Professorship in Medicine at Universidad del Salvador.
She is currently Head Associate Professor in Instituto Universitario Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires, Chair of Education at the Department of Ophthalmology, Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires, Director of the Postgraduate Specialization in Ophthalmology Program and Researcher at Instituto Universitario Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires. She is also member of the Center for Research in Education of Health Professionals at the same institution.
She is a board member of the Ophthalmology Foundation and a member of the Argentinian Council of Ophthalmology Accreditation Committee for the Argentinian Ministry of Health.
She is a reviewer for several medical journals, has published and/or presented over 80 scientific studies, presented over 530 lectures, and chaired, coordinated and tutored over 130 courses, workshops and symposia.
Meena Swaminathan

Dr. Meenakshi Swaminathan, MS, currently is an Ophthalmology consultant at the Capstone Clinic, Chennai, India and Visiting professor at Sri Ramachandra Medical College, Chennai.
Residency and fellowship trained in the USA. Worked at Medical Research Foundation, Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai for 20 years and Director Academics for fourteen years of those twenty. She practices Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. She has worked with the ICO, ORBIS on various projects and initiatives in education. She worked with the All India Ophthalmological Society as Chairperson of the “Teachers in Ophthalmology” initiative. She serves as the Chairperson of the Mentoring Programs subcommittee of the OFEC.
The Main Purpose of this Series
Ophthalmic educators are often not taught how to teach. There is a science to best teaching practices and principles that result in more effective learning by the student. This series of manuscripts will describe best teaching principles and include application of adult learning principles, generational teaching, continuing professional development, giving effective feedback, teaching tips in all types of settings, teaching professionalism & ethics, best uses of technology, and critical thinking. The goal of the series is to improve ophthalmic educators’ teaching abilities and to produce better ophthalmologists and ultimately better eye care.
